Indigneous drummers lead round dance on Penn Ave in front of Trump Hotel against pipelines

On the evening of April 27, as the People’s Climate March was two days out, drummers from multiple Indigenous communities held a drum circle and round dance in front of Trump Hotel. At the climax the entire round dance took over Penn Ave in front of the hotel, blocking traffic in all 4 directions at Penn and 12th sts. The drummers and dancers were there because of Trump’s executive orders ramming pipelines through Indigenous lands, and Trumps general pro-extractive agenda too.

Donald Trump thinks he can start with the Dakota Access Pipeline, then build the Keystone XL and follow up with pipeline after pipeline, fracking site after fracking site, and mine after mine. Some of the worst offenders are the uranium mines and the Canadian tar sands mines, both notorious producers of childhood cancer. In the case of the Canadian tar pits the KXL would serve, some rare childhood cancers now occur at 400x the normal rate among the children of 14 Indigneous nations bordering the site. Smoking raises the lung cancer risk by 300x for comparison, usually in mid-life or later. Yet, both the US and Canada consider Indigenous children getting cancer a perfectly acceptable price for their fossil fuel greed. Indigneous communities have resisted this kind of behavior and outrage for over 500 years and are still resisting today.
