Black Lives Matter disrupts Mayor Bowser at Freshstart 5K for Javon Hall

On the 1st of January, DC Mayor Bowser got an unpleasant surprise when she showed up at the Freshstart 5K walk. Family members and friends of Javon Hall backed by Black Lives Matter activists showed up. They were demanding she release the police body camera footage from when cops shot and killed Javon Hall on Dec 25, 2016. She turned her back and refused to face them.

Dear DC Direct Action News — Thanks for this and the other updates I receive. I’ve been wondering if there’s a direct action clearing house in DC that puts out information about these actions before they take place, so that people like me can join when we can, rather than wishing after the fact — when we learn about them from your emails — that we’d known in advance.

Is there such? If not, are you folks interested in starting something like this?

    thanks — Stacey Young 202-531-7903

I do not have the resources to set up such a clearinghouse. DC Indymedia dcindymedia.org still exists, is still used (most of these stories go there too) and has a calendar at washingtonpeacecenter.net/alerts Though a lot of things never get posted there.

In the old days people primarily used the Indymedias for this but since 2010 or so there has been a mass migration to unsafe corporate servers such as Twitter and worst of all Facebook. Things organized exclusively over Facebook I hear about after the fact or not at all, as I refuse to have an account there and in fact block Facebook as protection from tracking by sharing buttons. Twitter can be searched without an account using “hashtag” search terms but not being a real Twitter user it is hit or miss for me to discover things that way. No idea how to do a no-account search via Tor of Facebook events.

This action itself was one I heard about after the fact as whoever organized it was not using any communication channels I am also on. Of course, that could have been word-of-mouth amoung friends to set up a quick hit or to prevent the Mayor’s security goons from finding out in advance.
