Close Gitmo activists march on, invade Museum of American History

The 11th of January was the 12th anniversary of the opening of Guantanimo Bay. Half the time it has been open has been after Obama’s broken promise to close this hellhole forever.

On the 11th of January, 2014, under at times heavy rain, over 100 protesters from many groups marched from the White House to the Smithsonian Museum of American History. They were demanding that the prison at Guantanimo Bay become history-and that it never be forgotten.

Obama was specifically called out for using Congress as an excuse to break his promise to close Gitmo. Had he threatened to simply order the guards to open all cell doors and return home, Congress would have given him anything he wanted.

Upon arrival at the Museum of American History, protesters entered the building for a direct action at the “War Exhibit” inside. I was unaware that anyone planned to go inside-and thought things were over when the crowd appeared to disperse. A hit-and-run incident where a tour bus damaged a police vehicle was an effective distraction for me-and probably also for the cops.

Lacy, Cool Revolution, and others realized what was going on and got photos from inside the museum, including Lacy’s incredible “Price of Freedom” shot.
