On the 21st of November, Secretary of State John Kerry appeared at American University for an event with a delegation from China. Outside were protesters demanding he refuse to grant the permit for the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline to cross the US-Canadian border.
There were some tense interactions between police and protesters on more than one occasion. American University’s cops were made part of MPD after a large protest some years back, according to one of the students who was at the protest. Most but not all of the protesters were AU students.
The cops were particularly insistant in a failed attempt to prevent protesters from lining up between the street and the SIS building, near what was probably the original route for Kerry’s motorcade.
