On the 9th of November, protesters arrived outside the CIA’s Dolly Madison Boulevard gates, finding them locked and barricaded as on prior occasions. This time around, demonstrators laid a line of stones on the pavement in front of the barricades, one stone for each name of a person killed by drones read at the rally. The names read out and stones laid represent only a small fraction of the people killed by US drone strikes.
Again, stories were told of children who watched family members die under missiles fired by US drones, in one case a farm family whose land a Taliban guerilla made a cell phone call from a ditch near or on.
The drone strikes have not made the American ruling class any safer. During the past week, a US drone strike killed the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, a man involved in tentative peace negotiations with the Pakistani government. Due to this drone strike, the peace talks have probably ended. His replacement is “Mullah Radio,” one of the most hard-line of all Pakistani Taliban leaders. He is the man that ordered a 15 year old girl shot in the head for promoting education for girls, and was notorious for floggings when his faction ruled the Swat Valley.
