Scenes from the pre-Halloween High Heel Race on 17th st

On the 29th of October the annual High Heel Race was held on 17th st. This has been a tradition for decades, beginning on Halloween itself in the 1980s and becoming a major event after a 1991 police assault backfired. Until that time the race was an informal event held on the open street.

The next year, Halloween 1992, a huge crowd took over 17th st and closed it down for the race. Since then the race has mushroomed into one of the largest of DC’s tourist events, forcing the date to move to (usually) the last Tuesday before Halloween.
