Greenpeace vigil demands Russia drop piracy charges against Arctic 30

On the 5th of October, Greenpeace activists and supporters showed up outside the Russian Cultural Center demanding that Putin’s government drop the “piracy” charges against the “Arctic 30.”

Video of the vigil

They were taken prisoner by the Russian Navy after an attempt to hang a banner from a Gazprom oil rig in the Arctic was met with gunfire and paramilitary attackers. All 30 activists plus the Arctic Sunrise were captured. Russia has formally charged them with “piracy.” Unlike Greenpeace, real pirates would either be holding the oil platform for ransom or would have sunk it.

The vigil in DC was one of many held around the world, and a major march was reported to take place in Moscow on the same day demanding the Arctic 30 be released.
