On the 13th of September, in the wake of Mayor Grays’s veto of the living wage act, several DC pastors and their supporters held a prayer vigil at the Ga Ave Wal-Mart construction site.
After prayers by two of the pastors, the group walked all the way around the Wal-Mart site. After one lap, people began alternating between holding down the main vigil location and walking around the Wal-Mart until 7 times around were complete. This was to symbolize the march around the walls of Jericho in the Bible, in which the walls collapsed when trumpets were blown at the completion of the 7th lap. Some believe the trumpets were a signal to sappers who undermined the walls of Jericho.
Wal-Mart’s business model, like the walls of Jericho, can be undermined. If the Mayor’s veto of the LRAA is overridden, this site may never open. If it becomes unionized, it will almost certainly be closed and abandoned. Wal-Mart has a history of closing any store or department that becomes unionized, meaning we have a road map for undermining their plans and throwing them out of DC.
