On the 28th of August, a massive crowd marched freom 600 New Jersey Ave to the Washington Monument. There a line stretched from 17th st all the way back to 15th st to pass through police search checkpoints.
I found it quite ugly that a march of folks mostly opposed to such policies as NYC’s “stop and frisk” would itself be stopped and searched. I saw a few of the “Stop Mass Incarceration-the new Jim Crow” placards that Park Police had stolen by the hundreds on Saturday.
Of course, Obama speaks today at the march, while as soon as tomorrow he may be embarked on bombing targets in Syria. Whatever one may think of US intervention in that war, the fact is, Martin Luther King would probably have opposed it based on his record of opposing US wars in places like Vietnam.
Despite all of this, energy among the marchers was high, as they commemorated the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom 50 years ago.
