Anti-Keystone XL protesters show up outside Obama speech

On the 11th of July, protesters against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline showed up outside a hotel at 16th and M streets where Obama was scheduled to speak. The Sierra Club was heavily represented, the objective was to remind Obama to reject the pipeline.

Video highlights of this “bird-dogging” action

Nearly an hour before Obama arrived, cops shut down both M street and 16th st, causing serious traffic backups throughout downtown. The Sierra Club did not resist orders to cross to the east side of 16th st. A lockdown would have probably delayed or even cancelled the speech, but might have been too strong for the “reminder” the bird-dogging campaign at all Obama’s speaking stops is intended as.

Obama is supposed to decide this month (7-2013) whether or not to permit the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline to cross the border with Canada.
