The 11th of April marked the 64th day of the ongoing hunger strike at Guantanimo Bay. Vigils were held all over the world, one of them at the White House, to remember detainees some of whom have been on hunger strike for three months.
At the White House vigil, the accounts of attorney Clyde Safford Smith, who is representing Guantanimo detainee Shaker Aamir, were read out. The account details a horrific escalation of beatings and “focrible cell extractions” since the hunger strike began.
Several of the hunger strikers are close to death, yet torture and abuse at Guantanimo Bay are getting worse according to detainee lawyers who have been able to get information out.
Many of the detainees have been “cleared for release,” yet are still being tortured in Guantanimo with such tactics as sleep deprivation and brutal “cell extractions.”
