On the 15th of January, the Interfaith Moral Action on, Climate representing many different religions, blocked two entry gates to the White House compound. After nearly an hour and a half, police refused to make arrests.
Before the blockades, prayers were said by representatives of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Native American spirituality asking for an end to the use of fossil fuels and especially tar sands oil. Continuing and uncompromising rejection of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline was one of three direct demands made of President Obama.
Others spoke out against the horrors of mountaintop removal coal mining. One speaker carried a cross with a piece of coal and a barbed wire crown on it.
As the blockades began, speakers read out the names of some of the people killed by Superstorm Sandy.
