Over 100 arrests-and possible police abuse-at antiwar protest

Over 100 people, including Pentagon Papers leaker Danial Ellsburg, the Bradley Manning of the Vietnam War were arrested at the White House on March 19, the 8th anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq The police reported 113 arrests to mainstream media outlets. Not reported was screams from the police tent which sounded like someone being tortured or injured by police, and suspended arrests for at least 15 minutes.

Police horses were used to block camera views of the arrest area from the left, which vans blocked the direct sightline down the center. I was able to zoom in past the horses to see the arrest, but could only hear the screaming, not see what was taking place inside the tend. One person reported seeing blue jeans and someone on the ground by a police van, but I could not find it and later got a shot of a blue bag on the ground in that location.

These events were preceded by a rally in the park followed by a playing of Taps and a silent march through the streets that returned via Penn Ave from the East. A number of the civil disobediance protesters stood not on the sidewalk, but on the concrete base of the White House fence from the time of arrival back at the White House until their arrest. While I heard rumors of chains, I was unable to see anyone chained to the fence, either up close in the early part of the CD, of on a zoom lens later.

During the rally, speakers warned that the “Aiding the Enemy” charge against Bradley Manning could lead to him being sentenced to death, as the military “justice” system is not bound by prosecutor’s decisions not to overtly seek the death penalty. Of course, executing Bradley Manning would set off the great grandmother of all shitstorms. Today’s protest would look very, very small compared to what an execution of Bradley Mannin would unleash.
