Mumia supporters march on Dept of “Justice”

Posted in Uncategorized on April 26, 2010 by dcdirectactionnews

On April 26, an estimated 100 people marched from a church on NY Ave to the Dept of Justice. On Penn Ave they took three lanes of traffic-with not a cop in sight!

Audio Coverage courtesy of WSQT Direct Action Radio

At DOJ, they demanded that Eric Holder personally come down to receive tens of thousands of petitions to free Mumia, but apparently he only sent an underling to placate the crowd.

This is not just about Mumia, it’s about all the innocent people unjustly on Death Row-and about all the political prisoners buried alive in AmeriKKKa’s prisons.

Notes about the audio:

live sound and interview of participant. Long intro is to explain who Mumia is and the significance of his case to white radio listeners who have never heard of him before.

IMF Protesters enter Mayflower Hotel, take the streets

Posted in Uncategorized on April 26, 2010 by dcdirectactionnews

The last two scheduled events of the Anticapitalathon Games generated another wrongful arrest, and later another confrontation at a hotel full of IMF delegates. Still later, a police attempt to stop the march was defeated as protesters pushed through.

Things began for the evening with the “Capture the Flag” game, while a sound system was pumping on the east side of Farragut. This sport teaches affinity group tactics and speed on foot.

About halfway through Capture the Flag, cops suddenly surrounded the sound man and arrested him, allegedly for blocking the sidewalk, even though his equipment appeared to be well under than half the width of the sidewalk. This was a blatant example of an arrest made under any available excuse for no more reason than to disrupt the Games.

After Capture the Flag wrapped up, the Closing Ceremony began, putting to rest all doubts about rather it was even possible with the extreme police behavior seen the previous night.

The Closing March headed north, taking Connecticut Ave-until the Mayflower Hotel, packed with IMF delegates, suddenly made the sidewalk more attractive. At that point, the march surged towards the Mayflower, with a number of protesters sucessfully getting inside for a short period. The cops seeminlg had cooled off for a short period, and this did not generate arrests or violence, with protesters instead being peacefully escorted out or leaving on their own(I could not tell which).

After the Mayflower, marchers retook the streets through Dupont Circle, Adams-Morgan, 16th st, U st and beyond. In Adams-Morgan, cops at one point tried to bottle up the march by surrounding it, but their blockade was broken through and the cops backed off.

Interestingly, neither Capt Harold nor any of the other white shirt senior cops who follow protests were anywhere to be seen all night.

IMF soccer wakes delegates, storm Washington Circle Hotel

At about 11 PM on April 23, soccer players deployed to the Concordia Hotel, owned by the IMF itself and housing only IMF delegates for the weekend.

The banners everyone marched in with were quickly converted to soccer goals, and enough soccer balls were on hand to replace any losses to the cops.

For the next two hours plus, first a noisy soccer game and then a noisy protest kept delegates to the IMF meetings away.

During this time, cops periodically charged into the crowd, theoretically to remove things like bucket drums that they and/or the hotel and delegates did not like very much.

There were several confrontations with the cops, in at least two cases leading to minor personal injuries. I got three scrapes on my right hand protecting my camera after being pushed over my bike by cops chasing someone else. Another person also received hand injuries.

When people left the Concordia, the quick-time march got ahead of the cops-and STORMED the Washignton Circle Hotel, also housing IMF/World Bank delegates. This led to at least nine confirmed arrests(one for a felony) and ended in cops chasing people through the streets. The chases were preceded by Capt Harold declaring an “unlawful assembly,” and reading the required three warnings one after the other, not stopping at the end of one reading before beginning the next. Capt Harold also had quite a potty mouth on the bullhorn, saying “Back up you fucking! Back up!” He also told his men “take him out” as an order to arrest someone, and read the required three warnings for a mass arresrt one after another, without the required intervals in between, launching his attack even before the third warning got out. hey Harold, want a Becker-style civil lawsuit?

There is also an unconfirmed report that people were struck in the face with cop batons or nightsticks at some point in the night.
Any arrests that stemmed from the unlawful assembly order may violate the laws the city passed after the Becker and Pershing Park incidents concerning mass arrests and required police warnings(and intervals between them).

HLS customers get tax day office demos

Posted in Uncategorized on April 16, 2010 by dcdirectactionnews

On April 15, Big Pharmas Novartis and Astra-Zenica received morning protests at their DC lobbying offices. Both are customers of puppy-killing Huntingdon Life Sciences, a contract animal testing firm that kills 500 animals every day testing products like bleach and Splenda.

WSQT Radio audio coverage

Seven undercover investigations have caught so-called researchers there punching beagle puppies in the face and dissecting live monekys with no painkillers of any kind.

Now it’s the CUSTOMERS of Huntingdon Life Sciences getting headaches, as bullhorn-wielding protesters show up at any time…

(clip-your money your fault)

That it is! These companies have been warned time and again to DUMP HUNTINGDON LIFE SCIENCES like hundreds of others have done, but they have refused to listen. Even a threat by the Animal Liberation
Front to flush the ashes of Novatis’s CEO’s mother(which they are holding) down the toilet
(toilet flush)
has yet to get them to listen.

(clip-if you want to get some rest, cut your ties with HLS!)

Now Huntingdon Life Sciences is a sinking ship. They can’t even get a bank account except with the government because nobody in the banking industry wants to be called out for being a puppy killer at work and at home. Some have said HLS could take down some of their customers as they sink-and some have even said they might not even last out the year-because for puppy killers, there’s…

NO SLEEP FOR THE WICKED…

Early morning on Thursday, April 8, protesters showed up at the offices of Novartis, Astra-Zeneca, Sanofi-Aventis-and Bristol-Myers Squibb. They were there to demand that all four Big Pharmas stop contracting for animal testing with puppy-killing Huntingdon Life Sciences.

Now animal rights protesters bring headaches to Huntingdon Life Sciences customers…

(INTERVIEW)

You heard that-nobody likes a puppy killer, and Huntingdon Life Sciences customer Bristol-Myers Squibb is ether bailing out of or being evicted from their downtown DC lobbying office. In DC there’s truly…

Protesters occupy Mt Pleasant Library, chain door open

Posted in Uncategorized on April 4, 2010 by dcdirectactionnews

April 3 was the last day the Mt Peasant Library was open-for at least 18 months of (maybe) renovation. On April 3, protesters held the building open at closing time with a door chained open and an occupation of the basement.

This was after an outdoor speak-out and a tour of the building. As people left the building at closing (for good) time, attention was called to the chained-open basement door and people poured down the wheelchair ramp and re-entered through the basement. Several stayed even after the police arrived, risking arrest.

It took an hour and ten minutes for cops to get the necessary tools to cut the chain holding the basement door open, and nearly that long to talk people into leaving with false promises that Jim Graham would stop by to hear community grievances about shutting down the ONLY library in Ward 1.

Since Graham did not show, we need to wonder what OTHER promises made are falsehoods. Will they really renovate and reopen on time? Will the “interim library” or trailer really open in a month? Or will the building go to developers, who seem damned interested in the area?

The Greenwash Guerillas strike again! On Fossil Fools Day, the first of April, several thousand PEPCO customers received letters promising a switch by 2020 to 100% renewable energy, no more MTR coal, and the cancellation of proposed rate hikes, along with a phone number to call PEPCO

From Washington Post coverage:

“The letter directed customers to http://www.pepco-green.com, a Web site that carried similar messages.

This morning, Pepco put out a statement saying that the letter and the Web site were fake.

“We have been alerted that a bogus Web site and other false communications posing as Pepco were issued today. This bogus Web site is not secure and does not represent Pepco,” Pepco said on its Web site.

‘Some folks really did a good job,’ Pepco spokesman Clay Anderson said this morning. ‘But it ain’t us.’ ”
